Outing 2 & 3 2026 Update

Fellow Hibernians,

For our last two outings the lads dealt with lots of challenges. But despite the somewhat iffy weather and some over-caffeinated rangers the boys  persisted. You can’t keep the Hibernians down.

It was a cold and rainy day for golf when we returned to EGB for our second outing of the year. Sure, we had a few no-shows, and the conditions were not great, but the boys  played a variation of an Irish Rumble and had a grand time.

First place team: John Fahey, John Carroll, Rocco Nicoletti and (in his first Hibs outing) Michael Schuck  98 points

Second place team: Noel McNamara, Paul Orsino, Bill Lavelle and Tom Williams  98 points

Third place team: Dermot Flynn, Leo Reynolds, Chris Frattaroli, Donnie O’Dwyer  95 points

Closest to the pin:Third hole: Eric McDonald  11’11″

Ninth hole: Tom Birkett

Fifteenth hole: Nobody

Seventeenth hole: Leo Reynolds  22’ 7″
As you can see above, Dermot Flynn had a pretty good outing, leading his team to a third place finish. But that was not the highlight of his week. Just a few days later Dermot was playing a round with friends and fellow Hibernians, and he finally accomplished a feat that has evaded him for his over thirty five years of playing golf. Yes, on the ninth hole at Hubbard he finally got his hole-in-one. Sure, some might say “about time” or “you didn’t buy many drinks did you”. But that’s not the Hibernian way. We say “Congratulations Dermot. You can buy me a drink next time you see me.”

Here is Dermot and company celebrating his rare achievement with some fellow Hibernians and their much better halves. (Rumor has it that Ted bought dinner. That’s a pretty economical hole-in-one, Dermot.)

Next, things got serious, as outing number three brought us to Sterling Farms, and the first round of the Club Championship. The conditions at Sterling were brutal.

The greens were diabolically slick, and the wind was pushing the balls all over the place, but still there was some great play, and exciting matches.

Singles: Derrek Magro  42

Joe Nicoletti  37

Danny Fay  37
Low gross: Troy O’Sullivan 81

Closest to the pin:

Fifth hole: PJ Tynan  2′

Eight hole: Derrek Magro 8′

Fifteenth hole: Joe Nicoletti  2’6″

Seventeenth hole:  Nobody again. Hmm..

The tough conditions weren’t the only issue the boys had to deal with. The rangers at Sterling were a bit jumpy, and mighty determined to move us along. Almost every one of our groups had multiple visits from impatient rangers urging us to play faster, despite the fact that none of our groups were behind schedule. While teeing up on the seventeenth, Omar Zabian’s group was again urged to hurry up. At that point Omar, usually one our more diplomatic players, had had enough. In animated fashion, and using some spicy language, Omar explained that his group was playing plenty fast enough, and if they played any faster they would be hitting up into the group ahead. Eventually the two combatants were separated and play resumed. In fairness to the grouchy ranger, the boys were playing the seventeenth hole, so the group on the green ahead was probably safe. See above.

Thanks to Burns for hosting the post-round seminar.

See you tomorrow at Philip $ Rotella for the second round of the club championship.
