Fellow Hibernians,
Last Sunday we took the long and winding road to Putnam County Golf Course to have a few laughs, lose a few balls, and crown a couple of lads as the doubles champions of 2024. The greens at Putnam are known for their difficult undulations, but on Sunday they were also slow, wet and bumpy. That, and the daylong mist, might discourage a lesser group of golfers, but not the Hibs. We had a grand time.

The finals of the doubles championship was a match between former champs Jarleth Carroll and Eric MacDonald, and the cheeky teenagers Ian Duggan Jr and his cousin James Duggan. The youngsters started hot with birdies on one and seven, but when they made the turn, the match was tied. On the par-three twelfth, with the match still, tied, Jarleth stepped up to the tee with his hybrid, gave the ball a mighty whack, and watched it land gently on the green. Ian Jr. then flicked his eight-iron and also reached the green. Both players made par, but Jarleth was stroking so the former champs took the hole. It was a lead that old guys would not relinquish, as their strong play never let the upstarts back in the match. With some clutch shots by Jarleth and Eric, the match was over after sixteen.
Meet the new champs, same as the old champs. Congratulations to Eric and Jarleth

After the match the Duggan boys were naturally a bit disappointed, and they vowed to come back next year with even more super powers

The shot of the day (not made by someone named Duggan) was made by Noel McNamara. On the long par-four eighteenth, Noel was lying two, about a hundred yards out, when he swung his wedge, sending his ball up the hill, right at the flag. The boys in his foursome knew it was good, but because of the hill they couldn’t see the bottom of the flag. Then they heard the wonderful and unmistakable sound of a golf ball landing in a cup. But when they climbed the hill they saw a ball sitting a couple of inches from the edge of the cup. As they go closer, the boys saw the double Bs on the ball and realized it belonged to Brendan Brady. Noel’s miracle shot was, in fact, in the hole. Ask Noel about the shot. He can be a little shy, but if you try hard, you may get him to come out of his shell.
See you all this Saturday at that golf course next to Zody’s.
