As you can see, it was a profitable day for our club treasurer, Paul Atkinson. He wins the singles and three out of four CTPs. That is one thick envelope that Acko will present to himself.
The big event of the day was the final round of the Club Championship, between Derek Williams and PJ Tynan, and what a match it was. The fellas played the first eighteen holes last week at Tashua, and Tynan finished the day up one. On Saturday it was Williams’s turn to get hot, as he took a four-hole lead through nine.
As wet as river rats, the boys ducked into Zody’s at the turn, where Williams had a hot bowl of soup and Tynan had something more medicinal.
With the swing lubricant taking effect, Tynan took two of the next three holes. Williams came back to win the thirteen and seemed to be in good shape on fourteen with his ball on the green in two and Tynan blocked by the trees on the left side. PJ’s second shot rattled among the trees, then escaped and was found short and left of the green. Still, with Derek standing over a birdie putt, the lefty was in trouble. He needed a miracle, and he got one, as he chipped in for birdie to win the hole. Tynan’s miraculous play continued on the long par-three fifteenth, where he dropped a three wood to within twelve feet of the hole for the win, and on the sixteenth, where he eked out another win to get within one.
After a half on the seventeenth, the boys stepped up to the eighteenth tee with Tynan down one. Up first, PJ’s drive down the left side hit a hanging branch, and instead of bouncing straight or right, the ball went backwards, and ended up in a muddy lie under the trees. Williams then struck a perfect drive, leaving him about one hundred yards out. With Williams in great shape in the middle of the fairway, and knowing that a half on the hole would do him no good, PJ figured he had to try to carry the water to have a shot at winning the hole. But the bad lie and the bad luck won out, and despite a great effort, PJ’s ball ran into the pond. Williams did what he had to do by getting his next shot over the water, then chipping on and two-putting for the win.
Congratulations to our new club champion, Derek Williams! His name will go on the wall at Zody’s, where it will join the names of some of the finest golfers in the storied history of our club, and Noel McNamara.
See you this Saturday, back at EGB, where someone will win the final piece of hardware, the Player of the Year.
