Fellow Hibernians,
After a few years hiatus, the Hibs were welcomed back to Grassy Hills where we had an entertaining, but challenging afternoon. The course played long, the rough was thick, and the pin-placements were brutal. But the bar was friendly, so there is that.

The winners:
Doubles:
John Carroll and Dennis Conroy 44 points, $200
Paul Atkinson and Declan Docherty 43 points, 150
Donacha O’Dwyer and John Fahey 40 points, $100
Singles:
John Carroll 38 points, $100
Closest to the pin:
Third hole, Noel McQuillan $50
Sixth hole, Omar Zabian $50
Tenth hole, Not a single member of the Hibernian Golf Association managed to hit the green. $0. Shame…
Thirteenth hole, Eric McDonald $50
Seventeenth hole, Troy O’Sullivan $50
Low Gross:
Troy O’Sullivan $20
Doubles Matches:
Omar Zabian and Billy Mulhall defeated Dermot Flynn and Brendan Brady 4 and 3.
Eric McDonald and Jarleth Carroll got past Cyril Carroll and Mark Ward 2 and 1.
The Doubles Championship finals are now set. The team of Jarleth and Eric will defend their title against Omar and Billy.
What a day it was for John Carrol. The high schooler, with his booming tee shots and a laser like putting, blew by the entire field in singles play. More impressively, he pulled his useless partner over the finish line to win the doubles competition. His aging partner didn’t do much, but it was just enough to secure the victory.
Isn’t that the way it always is with doubles. In order to be successful you need to ham and egg it as a team. Proving the old expression: There is no I in Hibernian.
In other news: Declan Docherty stepped up to the tee on the par 5 16th, and bashed a long drive down the right side of the fairway. From there, he decided to go for the green, so he grabbed his 3-wood and took a massive hack. Unfortunately, his contact wasn’t as clean this time, and instead of the ball bouncing gently toward the hole, it plunked into the bed of high reeds that cuts across the fairway. This was no small penalty area his ball landed in. The reeds are about 12 feet high, and the hazard is about fifteen to twenty yards long. A bit dejected, Docherty walked up to the reeds and started poking around for his ball, while his playing partner shouted that the ball was much deeper into the hazard. That is when Declan took a step into the reeds, and then another. And then, he was gone, vanished among the reeds. Left with no other choice, his playing partners hit their approach shots, gathered at the green and waited. Then, like Shoeless Joe Jackson through the cornfields in Field of Dreams, he emerged on the other side, with a full complement of burrs and bug bites, but no golfball.
This Saturday the lads head up to Richter Park for the Semi-Finals of the Club Championship, and other hijinks. See you there.
